On personal development, mindful productivity, creative lifestyle design, and figuring it out as you go

Hey there, Brilliant!

Hope your April is moving along well! My month has been one of stabilizing after an acceleration. The first 90 days of any new job can be a steep learning curve, and I’m finding that starting weekly content creation followed the same pattern. But now, I'm getting into a rhythm where writing, filming, and posting are routine tasks that I can handle without much fuss. Establishing a flow is making the process feel much more natural and frictionless. Creativity is a muscle, and I'm finally warmed up.

Thanks to input from The Brilliant Beans, I’ve been able to get clear on the topics I want to focus on. My editorial calendar, which I manage in Notion, is keeping me on track. My living room set gives me a consistent filming look. And after a few months of working with a video editor, my post production workflow has become much smoother.

Things are shaking out - I’ll keep moving to the rhythm and finding the beat. 🥁

Spiritedly,
Ahsante

My latest videos, for your viewing pleasure and daily leisure
Punctuality is a Trap
In my latest video, I pose ideas about how we might release our preoccupation with timeliness in favor of a culture that allows for grace and respects the variety in human circadian rhythms.
My other recent videos include a reflection on the end of my 20's, how I review each week to keep track of my wellness and productivity, and how I mindfully gained confidence

Pieces of media and pop culture that I'm absolutely loving
Everything Smells Like Salmon
The perils of cooking salmon in a small apartment - too real! This short song by Tom McGovern is a bop that I definitely listened to on loop more than a few times.
Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Been Uniquely Stupid
This incredibly astute article from Jonathan Haidt in The Atlantic looks at how social media has been gradually weakening public discourse, and what steps we might take to correct it. I loved the solutions posed at the end. It's a long read, but there's an audio option which is great for listeners like me!

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High
by Joseph Grenny, Al Switzler, et all.

Speaking of having more productive dialogue, this book is a great resource to guide you in having the tough, potentially confrontational conversations that often come up in day-to-day life.

How do you correct someone without making them feel judged and attacked? How can you convey a common purpose while stating the issue? The analysis in this book provides an excellent framework for approaching conflicts and keeping conversations productive.

What's been keeping my productivity boosted
  • Newsfeed Eradicator. In my efforts to use social media intentionally, this app saves me from the endless scroll. Use this Chrome extension to replace the newsfeed on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites with a motivational quote that reminds you to stay focused on what matters.

  • Time Tracking. Over the past several months, I've become as careful about spending my time as I am about spending my money, and part of that is knowing where my time goes. Whether you use a time tracking app like Toggl, an hour-by-hour spreadsheet (more about that method in this Oh My Dollar episode) or simply write start & end times next to items on your to-do list (like I do within my Notion To-Do List), time tracking gives me insight into how I can be spending my minutes more effectively.
